ChatGPT tends to name the businesses that appear on the pages it reads: lists and directories, review sites, news articles, Google’s local listings and their own clear websites. A rival who is on more of those pages will be named more often. Nobody outside OpenAI can see exactly how ChatGPT chooses, so we cannot give you a formula, but the answers we collected from Kenya show six patterns, and each one points to something you can fix.
Here is what we looked at, what the patterns were, and the order we would fix them in. This is evidence from answers, not a peek inside the model, and we say where a pattern is only a pattern.
What we saw in 50 Kenyan answers
Every month we put the same 50 everyday buying questions to ChatGPT with web search on and the location set to Kenya: “Best dental clinic in Nairobi?”, “Best hotel in Kisumu?”, “Which sacco is best for savings and loans in Kenya?”. We recorded who it named and which websites it cited. Our first run was on 12/09/2026 and the second on 14/10/2026 to 15/10/2026. The full data is in our September 2026 research and October 2026 research.
The headline numbers:
- In September, ChatGPT named businesses in 48 of the 50 answers (96%), and showed a map list built from Google business listings in 39 (78%).
- It cited 131 different websites in September, and 42% of those citations went to Kenyan (.ke) sites.
- Of the 221 businesses named in September’s answer text, 108 (49%) were named again in October. 160 were named for the first time.
- For 6 of the 48 questions we could compare, October’s list had no business in common with September’s.
So there are two stories. Some competitors are named month after month, and some appear and vanish. Both are useful to understand.
Reason 1: they are on more lists and directories
For some questions ChatGPT leans on lists written by someone else. The clearest case is agencies. For all three agency questions, “Best web design company in Kenya?”, “Best SEO agency in Kenya?” and “Best digital marketing agency in Nairobi?”, ChatGPT cited clutch.co in both months, and in September it also cited goodfirms.co on the first two. Both are sites that list and review agencies.
The same happens in other trades. For “Best dental clinic in Nairobi?” it cited two rating sites in both months, top-rated.online and nairobidentalrating.com. For “Best hotel in Kisumu?” it cited tripadvisor.com in both months, and booking.com in September.
If a rival appears on those pages and you do not, ChatGPT meets them there and does not meet you. The fix is not to chase every directory. It is to find which lists ChatGPT cites for your own trade, by asking the question yourself and opening the sources, and then to get listed on those that are real and relevant.
Reason 2: their website says plainly what they do and where
Business websites were cited too. Take “Best agrovet supplier for dairy farmers in Kenya?”. ChatGPT cited Hotline Agrovet’s own site, hotlineagrovet.co.ke, in both months, and named Hotline Agrovet in both. In October, for “Best dental clinic in Nairobi?”, it cited the sites of two clinics it named, Karen Dental Clinic and Arrow Dental Centre.
We cannot say the site caused the mention. A strong business may have both a good site and a good reputation. But in these cases the page was there to be read, and a site with a vague homepage gives an assistant little to quote. A clear page says:
- What you do, in plain words (“dental clinic offering braces and implants”).
- Where you are (“Westlands, Nairobi, above Sarit Centre”), with the town and neighbourhood spelled out.
- Who you serve and what it costs, or a range.
- How to reach you: phone, WhatsApp, hours.
If you still need to build that page, our guide to SEO content writing gives the method.
Reason 3: reviews and news mention them
Reviews, travel pages and news show up as sources in the data. For “Best restaurant for nyama choma in Nairobi?” ChatGPT cited thekenyatimes.com in both months. In September it cited nairobionline.com for four questions, including the best private hospital in Nairobi and the best interior design firm. In October “Best interior design firm in Nairobi?” cited it again.
Hotels add a pattern of their own. The Kisumu hotel answer cited tripadvisor.com in both months and booking.com in September, and the Nakuru wedding hotel answer cited tripadvisor.com in September. For a hotel, a restaurant or a tour company, review sites are not a side issue, they are some of the pages the assistant reads.
News mentions are slower to earn, but they last. A feature in a Kenyan outlet or a local blog that names your business, with your location and what you do, is another place for an assistant to find you. The simple step is to ask every happy customer to review you on the platforms that matter in your trade, and to reply to each one.
Reasons 4 to 6
Reason 4: they appear in Google’s local listings
In September, 39 of the 50 answers came with a map list built from Google business listings, with more than 13 businesses in the list, on average, for each of those answers. If a competitor has a complete Google Business Profile with the right category, hours, photos and reviews, they are in that list. If you have no profile, or an unverified one, you are not. See our Google Business Profile guide for Kenya.
Reason 5: their name is clean and consistent
Some of the names in the map lists were long strings of keywords copied from the listing, such as a clinic whose listing name ran on to include “Braces Ngara Nairobi | Dentists Ngara | Teeth whitening”. That is not how a customer would write the name, and Google’s business name rules (opens in a new tab) say the name should match your real-world name, without taglines, services or location details. A messy name is hard for an assistant to match across your site, your profile and the pages that mention you. Use one name, spelled the same way, everywhere.
Businesses that rename themselves have the same problem. In our data, a courier that appears as Wells Fargo in September and Fargo Courier in October counts as two different businesses. Any change of name needs to be updated on every site that lists you.
Reason 6: some of it is chance
Do not panic about one answer. Only 49% of the businesses named in September were named again in October, and four questions kept all of their September names while six lost every one. Take the dental clinic question: five clinics stayed (Arrow Dental Centre, Astradental Services, Molars Dental Practice, Summit Dental Care and Sterling Dental), two dropped away and four were new. ChatGPT can give a different answer to the same question on the same day. Ask the question more than once before you decide a rival is permanently ahead.
What to fix first
If you do only five things, do them in this order.
- Ask your five most important customer questions in ChatGPT and write down who is named and which sources it cites. Do it again in a month.
- Make your website say what you do, where and for whom, in text, on the pages customers land on.
- Complete your Google Business Profile with your real name, the right category and recent reviews.
- Get listed on the two or three directories and review sites that ChatGPT actually cited for your trade, and keep the details identical to your site.
- Check you are not blocking OpenAI. OpenAI says that allowing its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, in your robots.txt is how a site can appear in ChatGPT search results, and that sites which opt out will not show in those answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. Their crawler documentation (opens in a new tab) explains how, and changes take about a day to apply.

Check your brand
Doing this by hand once is fine. Doing it every month for 50 questions is not.
- AI Visibility on the Pro plan tracks up to 50 questions and 10 brand terms. Each answer is marked Cited, Mentioned or Absent, with a score out of 100, and the text of every answer is kept. When you are Absent, you can open the answer and see who was named instead and which sources it used. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode are asked from Kenya. Claude and Gemini are also tracked, but they are not location-specific.
- Prompt Explorer on paid plans shows what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity answer for a single prompt that you type, which is the quickest way to test one question about your rival.
The simplest first step takes two minutes: check your brand on Rank.ke (opens in a new tab) and read the answer where a competitor was named and you were not.
Try AI Visibility on your own brand.
